The Art of Collaboration: How Working with Another Artist Fuels Growth

Recently, I had the opportunity to showcase a collaborative exhibition, Essence, created alongside fellow visual artist Annie Henry. This exhibition marked a turning point in my artistic journey, as it allowed me to explore the rich and unpredictable terrain of shared creativity. Collaboration is a powerful experience—it shakes up your usual ways of working, challenges your ideas, and pushes you to grow in ways you never anticipated. And it’s that space—the fertile, unfamiliar space of collaboration—that I find most compelling.

           Shaking Up Fixed Ideas

As artists, we all develop habits—those reliable tools and techniques we lean on when we’re creating. While these routines can be the backbone of a practiced craft, they can also become constraints. Collaboration has a way of shaking up those patterns. When another artist enters your process, their methods, perspectives, and instincts disrupt the familiar, forcing you to adapt and rethink your approach.

This disruption can be uncomfortable. You may find yourself questioning decisions that would usually feel automatic, or even defending creative choices you hadn’t considered deeply before. But in this friction lies the potential for reinvention. When two creative minds collide, they create a space where fresh ideas flourish—ideas that neither artist could have arrived at alone.

           The Role of Ego

Collaboration also exposes the ego in surprising ways. Art is personal, often deeply so, and sharing the creative process means relinquishing some control over the outcome. There’s a vulnerability in allowing another voice to shape a work that might otherwise feel like an extension of your own identity.

This can manifest in small, almost subconscious ways: an attachment to a specific idea, an unwillingness to compromise on a detail, or even a resistance to suggestions that challenge your vision. Recognising these moments for what they are—ego-driven instincts—can be transformative. Letting go doesn’t mean losing your voice; it means trusting that the interplay of two perspectives can lead to something greater than either individual contribution.

           Enriching Networks and Sharing Connections

One of the unexpected benefits of collaboration is how it enriches your network. When two artists come together, they bring their communities along for the ride—sharing contacts, audiences, and supporters. You’re not only creating art but also expanding your world by introducing your “people” to each other.

This exchange of networks is incredibly energising. It connects you to new opportunities, exposes your work to fresh audiences, and strengthens bonds within the creative community. Through collaboration, you don’t just broaden your artistic practice—you build a richer, more interconnected web of relationships that can inspire and sustain future projects.

           Finding Growth in Unfamiliar Places

Perhaps the greatest gift of collaboration is the way it pulls you out of your comfort zone. As an artist, stepping into unfamiliar territory can feel destabilising, but it’s in this uncertainty that the most profound growth happens.

Working with another artist often means navigating creative tension—learning to negotiate differences while finding common ground. It’s a dance of trust and communication, a constant balancing act between asserting your vision and being open to influence. This process teaches resilience, adaptability, and, most importantly, humility. It reminds us that art is as much about listening as it is about expression.

Moreover, collaboration can reinvigorate your practice. When you engage with another artist’s ideas and techniques, you gain new tools and perspectives to take back into your own work. The creative synergy of collaboration often leaves both artists enriched, their individual practices expanded by the experience.

           The Rewards of Shared Creation

Beyond the personal growth it fosters, collaboration also produces work that feels dynamic and alive. The interplay between two artistic voices creates layers of meaning, texture, and energy that wouldn’t exist in a solitary practice. The resulting work is a conversation—a dialogue between styles, ideas, and perspectives that engages the audience on a deeper level.

The rewards of this shared creation extend far beyond the finished pieces. Collaboration cultivates connection, not just between the artists but with the broader community of viewers and creators. It’s a reminder that art is, at its core, about exchange—of ideas, emotions, and experiences.

           Embracing Collaboration

My experience working on Essence left me inspired, invigorated, and more aware of the possibilities that collaboration offers. It’s a practice that challenges fixed ideas, exposes the ego, and fosters growth in ways you might not expect. And it’s that space—the fertile, unpredictable space of shared creativity—that holds the most potential.

One of the most exciting aspects of collaboration is how it connects you to new people and communities. By sharing networks, introducing “your people” to your collaborator’s world (and vice versa), the act of creating together becomes more than just about the work—it’s about building a larger, more connected creative community.

I’m already on the lookout for my next collaborator. If you’re an artist intrigued by the idea of exploring this shared creative space together, then let’s go!

Annie Henry and I are currently collaborating on an exciting new body of work that will debut at Wild West Works this November. Titled Essence, this project is a deep dive into our personal artistic visions and the themes that resonate with each of us.

Throughout this collaboration, we are exploring the local landscape for inspiration, each bringing our unique interpretations of what Essence means. Our creative process is built on a dynamic exchange of ideas, influencing one another’s work and fostering a dialogue that enhances both our individual practices.

In parallel, we are crafting pieces for the other to build upon, allowing us to experience the intersection between our solo work and the experience of true collaboration. This journey blends our distinct skills and materials, enriching our work and resulting in an exhibition that will be both diverse and vibrant.

We’re excited about the path ahead and look forward to presenting the culmination of our efforts. Essence is set to be a bold, playful exploration of creativity, showcasing the complexity of our artistic exchange.

Embracing the Soul of Copper

A conversation with Nicky Huxham about her passion - working with copper.

Speaking with Artist Nicky Huxham: Embracing the Soul of Copper

As an artist myself, I've always been drawn to those who have a deep connection with their chosen medium. Nicky Huxham is one such artist whose passion for working with copper is truly palpable. Nicky's recent journey has led her to The Copper Works Newlyn, coinciding with her participation in the exhibition "Hiraeth" at Wild West Works alongside my own works. I sat down with Nicky to delve into her captivating world of copper artistry.

Nicky Huxham: Working with copper feels like an intimate dance with history and artistry. The material itself is a treasure—smooth, warm-coloured, and an absolute delight to paint on. I find myself drawn to old, weathered water tanks, seeing beyond their corroded surfaces to the potential they hold. With a pair of tin snips, I carefully cut and clean these tanks, revealing panels of copper marked by time, adorned with vibrant corrosion and mineral deposits from years of holding and heating water.

What captivates me most is the copper's story. Instead of concealing its age, I embrace it, letting its natural beauty take centre stage in my work. Some panels are so strikingly beautiful in their weathered state that I feel adding anything more would only detract from their inherent charm.

My process is a labor of love—piecing together scrap bits, shaping them into cohesive pieces of art. Each panel becomes a canvas that not only bears my artistic expression but also carries the history and character of the copper itself. The rhythmic tapping of thousands of brass tacks brings a therapeutic energy, infusing each piece with its unique presence.

Copper isn't just a medium for me; it's my sanctuary, my Hiraeth. And now, my journey has led me to Newlyn Copper Works—a place that has opened new doors for me. It's here that I'm delving deeper into the craft, expanding beyond painting into the realm of a coppersmith. This transition signifies a deeper commitment, a newfound dedication to mastering the artistry of copper and exploring its infinite possibilities.

Nicky's words resonate deeply with me as an artist. Her reverence for the material and grit to her craft are truly inspiring. I have no doubt that her time at The Copper Works Newlyn will not only enhance her skills but also bring a new depth to her already captivating work. Keep an eye out for Nicky's future pieces—they're sure to be nothing short of extraordinary.

Imposter Syndrome Amidst Art's Diminished Value in Society

In a landscape where art's value appears to erode, Sarah Macdonald's retrospective exhibition, "Archival," offers a sobering reflection not just on her artistic journey but also on the struggles faced by artists in a society that seemingly underestimates the significance of their work. The current climate for the arts sector in the UK is marked by formidable challenges—budget cuts and dwindling support threaten the very foundation of creative expression. These challenges cast a shadow on the essential role of art in fostering creativity, preserving well-being, and contributing to societal growth.

"Archival" surfaces against this backdrop of adversity, serving as a poignant testament to the fragility of artistic endeavours. In a society where the intrinsic importance of art often fades into the background, this exhibition becomes a poignant moment for introspection, inviting contemplation on the broader implications of undervaluing creativity and its profound impact on societal norms.

The struggles of the arts sector lay bare a disheartening reality—a decline in creativity, compromised well-being, and the loss of considerable revenue that a thriving art scene could generate. Amidst these challenges, it's no wonder that artists grapple with imposter syndrome—a haunting feeling of inadequacy in a society that overlooks their invaluable contributions.

In this unforgiving environment, the prevalence of imposter syndrome among artists becomes a stark reflection of the discord between societal appreciation and the intrinsic value of artistic expression. The struggle to find validation in a society that overlooks the transformative power of art only exacerbates the internal battle for recognition and acceptance.

As visitors traverse "Archival," they're not merely witnessing an artist's retrospection; they're witnessing the silent struggle and resilience.

           Inspiring Doodles Workshop

, I have had the privilege of witnessing the transformative power of art in the lives of like-minded individuals. These workshops are a sanctuary where we come together to explore the myriad ways inspiration can manifest and the profound impact it has on our well-being.

           The Power of Inspiration

Inspiration is a magical force that can manifest in the most unexpected places. It doesn't always arrive on a schedule or at your convenience. Yet, when you actively seek out and embrace it, you can experience a profound shift in your perspective and well-being. The workshops I've hosted are designed to help participants do just that – invite inspiration into their lives.

           The Power of Like-Minded Souls

One of the most beautiful aspects of these workshops is the sense of community that forms among participants. There is an instant connection when you find individuals who share your passion for creativity. It's not just about the art; it's about the shared experience, the discussions, and the journey we embark on together.

By surrounding ourselves with kindred spirits, we create a safe space for expression and exploration. We learn from each other's experiences, and we celebrate the diverse ways inspiration touches our lives. This sense of community enhances our collective creative journey and enriches the overall experience.

           The Creative Process

Doodles are a gateway to creativity that often gets underestimated. They are unburdened by expectations and free from judgment. In the workshops, I encourage participants to let go of their inner critics and trust their instincts. The result is a raw, unfiltered expression of our inner worlds.

We explore a wide range of techniques and mediums, from simple pencil and paper to digital tools, each offering its unique channel for inspiration. Participants are encouraged to experiment, make mistakes, and, above all, have fun. The creative process is about learning, growing, and evolving, and our workshops provide the perfect platform for this.

           The Enriching Result

One of the most rewarding aspects of hosting these workshops is witnessing the transformative journey of the participants. As they immerse themselves in the world of doodles, they unlock new perspectives and dimensions of themselves. The images that emerge from the workshops are like a visual diary of their creative exploration.

I've had the privilege of hearing countless stories of how these doodles have impacted participants' lives. From sparking fresh ideas in their work to providing an outlet for stress relief and self-expression, the positive impact is undeniable. Many participants revisit their doodles regularly, drawing strength and inspiration from them when needed.

           The Workshop Continues

Inspiration is not a finite resource; it's a wellspring that replenishes itself. That's why the workshops I host are not a one-time experience. They are a continuous journey, a collective endeavour to explore the boundless world of creativity.

Painting Portheras

An in depth look at the process behind and Sarah's thoughts on painting Portheras.

           Painting Portheras in detail

This painting came about as a potential study of contrast in the form - “fat” and “thin” paint.

I have struggled in the past with scouting for painting ideas on glorious sunny days, feeling like there is no adversity to push against or lean on. Though looking at the rocks that loom and skirt down to Portheras Beach I was reminded that the brighter the day the darker the shadows. So it was to be a painting of contrasts.

I set out to have the sand a thinned layer of oil (actually more like a tinted layer of white spirit) and then in contrast the heavy dark shadows of the rocks in a “fat” thick oil paint..

I carried on drawing (with black paint) the rock’s shadows forming stencil like shapes of black over the various tones of earth colours. I found that these rigid shapes lacked the energy that I enjoy from a painting.

So I introduced charcoal, reconfirming the black marks already made but with more energy to these dark spaces, in-turn creating more movement in a lovely rich matte black.

The painting has ended up not just about “thin” and “fat” paint techniques expressing contrast. Its now, to me, about the contrasting energies these different elements guided me to paint, contrasting energies that are fundamental to their form and the way it all comes together - when land meets sea and vice versa..
